His Look – His Gaze
Luke 22:55-62NLT
55 The guards lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter joined them there. 56 A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. Finally she said, “This man was one of Jesus’ followers!”
57 But Peter denied it. “Woman,” he said, “I don’t even know him!”
58 After a while someone else looked at him and said, “You must be one of them!”
“No, man, I’m not!” Peter retorted.
59 About an hour later someone else insisted, “This must be one of them, because he is a Galilean, too.”
60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.
61 At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord’s words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.” 62 And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly.
Matthew 26:31-35NLT
31 On the way, Jesus told them, “Tonight all of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say,
‘God will strike[a] the Shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
32 But after I have been raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.”
33 Peter declared, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I will never desert you.”
34 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.”
35 “No!” Peter insisted. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the other disciples vowed the same.
The three denials of Jesus by Peter were absolutely shocking to his heart. For he had decreed that he would never deny Jesus, that others might but never him.
At that moment of Peter’s denial the Lord turned and looked at Peter. He gazed deeply into his eyes, into his heart, into his soul and spirit with His penetrating eyes of Love and Truth.
What did that GAZE look like?
I don’t believe it was “I told you so” as we might look at someone who we had explained to them earlier that what they said was not true and what we said would come to pass. “I told you so”.
I believe it goes back to verse 32
Luke 22:32NLT
32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”
I believe the look was one that said – remember My prayer not just My word that you would deny Me – for even angels came to strengthen Me as I chose to do the Father’s will.
So as you choose to love Me and My will and My ways more than your own life, that fear of personal death comes off of you and you are able to embrace My will for your life.
You must then go and build others up.
The Look was one that said I know what you will do next – you go out and weep bitterly – and you go into despair except for My prayers. You thought you knew your heart – but you did not.
I saw it and I saw the fears and the denial – I saw the weakness and the bitter tears. And I go to the cross to atone for all of this.
Three times you denied me –
Three nails
Both hands – 2 nails
Both feet – 1 nail
Total surrender of My life for yours and all of mankind
That your hands may become Mine and do My Kingdom business
And your feet will go and walk where I ask you to go
And though all you see is a failure, a denier, a coward right now,
I see a man who will walk as a blazing fiery furnace of power and love and truth
Whose shadow is dangerous and will not shrink back from anything I ask you to do.
So with My Look
My purposed turn and look
Amidst My own aloneness and trial
I look and impart to you –
I still love you Peter, I still have a plan for you Peter
For is it I AM Who looks at you
The Father and I are One and Holy Spirit will come and abide within and you will be transformed into another man
So don’t run away, don’t try to harm yourself , don’t leave your faith – no Peter – run to Me
Peter ran, Peter wept, Peter abandoned Jesus and was not at the cross but Jesus kept His word and went looking for Him, found him fishing, he had returned to what he knew before He became a disciple of Jesus. Jesus did not condemn him, he cooked him breakfast.
His gaze – His look was fixed upon Peter – and that gaze drew Peter’s heart to His Heart.
And when Jesus appeared on the shore cooking fish, Peter jumped off the boat and ran to Him!
So when we fail, when we are stunned by our own hearts responses in situations, let us see His Face, let us see His Gaze, let us remember His Look of Eternal Love and run to Him.
This amazing God of restoration, this God know never gives up on us!
